One of the closest beaches to Koufonisia village, besides the town beach is Fanos. A twenty minute walk on a rocky dirt road from Aeolos Hotel, where I stay. When you finally get there, it feels like an oasis. There are more cars here this year, and they drive the dirt road kicking up the dust. There’s a cafe/bar for lunch, snacks and drinks. The beach was pretty crowded, the beach chairs are free and there were plenty of young people making and selling string and beaded bracelets, necklaces and ankle bracelets. Fanos feels like a throwback to the eighties. Sort of organized, sort of loose, much like the rest of the island. If you don’t want to walk there, you can take the small boat from the port, they drop you off on the way to Pori beach, which is the last stop on the boat run.
